Madagascar
Madagascar in one word: “unique!”. The country developed a completely unique flora and fauna after having been isolated for many years. Many species of plants and animals are only to be found on this magic island. The inland of Madagascar is just as unique; with rain forests, endless deserts and red highlands. Miles of sandy white beaches and small islands can be found here as well.
Not just the nature here is amazing, culture lovers too can be amazed. The capital Antavanario invites you to stroll around the cobbled streets alongside colonial buildings that the French built here about a hundred years ago. In the picturesque mountainous town of Antsirabe you can bath in steam baths.

Highlights
Wildlife Madagascar Madagascar has one of the most divers native flora and fauna in the world and this is one of the reasons why tourists flock to the island. Maki's can only be found here, the ringtail maki probably being the best well known species, thanks to the Disney movie Madagascar! |
Activities
From July to September you can go whale & dolphin spotting around Madagascar. From the Ile Sainte Marie, you can go spot these animals by boat. These whales are swimming from the Southpole to this part of the world to feed their young. You can also go snorkeling and enjoy all the underwater wildlife and corals. This island is also a great place to enjoy the beaches, coconotpalms and flowering lilacs and orchids. | |
Hike the most beautiful nature areas with your guide and search for Maki's, reptiles and amphibians that are native to Madagascar. There is also an option to do this at night! |
Beste time to travel
The best time to travel to Madagascar is the drigh season; from April to about middle of November. High season runs from July to October, so book well in advance!
From the middle of June through to September it is winter in the highlands (Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Andringitra, Andasibe); this means that it will be cool during the day and cold at night; temperatures can drop to 5°. At the coast it is always nice and warm.
Rainy season (mid January – mid March) is best avoided.
If you are interested in doing a whale excursion: you best book between July and September, birders book best between September and December and for baby lemures you best book in October and November!
What is the ideal length of safari to Madagascar? Our advice would be to take at least two weeks, but better would be three! Infrastructure on the island is not too good and it takes many hours on the road to travel as distances can be huge and so days can be long and exhausting.
