It is the second largest lake in the African continent and the deepest lake in Africa. It stretches from north to south about 673 kilometers and an average of 50 kilometers wide and the deepest point is 1,500 meters. The lake is divided among four countries – Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia, with Tanzania (46%) and the DRC (40%) possessing the majority of the lake. The water flows into the Congo River system and ultimately into the Atlantic Ocean.
