Description
The area includes diverse types of landscapes including volcanic springs, lakes, Rhaha and Rufiji rivers, savannas, woodlands, grasslands and plains. Other animals that can be seen with a little luck are: hippo, rhino, buffalo, hartebeest, kudu, sable antelope, eland, reed buck, bush buck, warthog, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and of course predators such as lion, leopard and hyena. There are about 440 species of birds and reptiles including crocodiles, several species of snakes and lizards, and in the sanctuary grow over 2000 different kinds of plants and flowers.
With its flora, fauna, hot springs, lagoons, rivers and various types of landscapes Nyerere has earned its spot on the World Heritage List since 1982. In spite of the large surface area, this area has only a handful of luxury safari camps, so it remains a unique and exclusive destination. At Nyerere Game Reserve you can do a boat trip on the Rufiji river, do some sailing between the hippos, crocodiles and many (water) birds. Walking safaris and game drives are also popular activities in the reserve.
