Bandung, City of Flowers, as Bandung is sometimes called, is home to several museums and is known for the distinctive architecture displayed in its 1920s Art Deco buildings. Bandung is surrounded by volcanic mountains, this city used to be filled with tea plantations established by the Dutch to capitalise on the region’s fertility.

The Ijen volcano on East-Java, with perhaps the most spectacular volcanic crater, is special because of its natural environment, its turquoise sulfur lake, its blue fire and the sulfur mining. Twice a day workers enter the crater to collect between 75 kilos and 90 kilos of sulfur, facing toxic gases, and carry out of the live volcano in a trial of about two hours.

Best time to travel
