To fully enjoy the charm of Lake Kivu, it is best to drive through the towns, where the winding road will bring you right next to the lake, with the mountains ensuring wonderful views.
Lake Kivu is one of the major lakes in the Great Lakes region in Africa and lies on the border with Rwanda and Congo. Nearby volcanic activity takes place which makes it extremely fertile and the mountains that surround Lake Kivu provide a spectacular backdrop during your safari in Rwanda. There are three major cities in this region. Gisenyi, on the north side of Lake Kivu, is an old colonial beach resort. Kibuye is the most beautiful city of the three, and in August you can witness the annual migration of the kite, the impressive raptor. Cyangugu, was an important trading point of Lake Kivu and still has that atmosphere.
